Horror stories are intended to fill the reader with fear and terror in only a few short pages. Two authors that are able to accomplish this easily are Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King. They are able to create an atmosphere around you that submerses you in your own world of terror. Horror fiction should be able to provoke some sort of response. This can include psychological, emotional, or even a physical response. I can second having a physical response from reading horror stories. I was tapped on the shoulder while reading and felt like i jumped a foot out of my chair. I think it's that kind of writing that makes reading so enjoyable.
